The Data Deluge
It's true, what some technology analysts say: If data runs too rampant and widespread, it might as well not even exist. If you can't tame it, you can't channel it into intelligence. So what are companies doing about it? According to Forrester senior analyst Barry Murphy, they're slashing complexity -- not just in terms of the amount of data that confronts information workers, but also the number of applications being used. They're also trying to structure applications within individual business processes so that more data-dependent operations are automated. The latter, especially, cuts costs by speeding processes and cutting the number of applications in play. Once upon a time, the IT practice briefly known as "knowledge management" failed to generate any real attention because it was seen as yielding no return on investment. Well guess what? Now it does. See what Murphy says about what some of your peers are doing to channel the data deluge. E-MAIL | SLASHDOT | DIGG This is a public forum.
