BI Development Tools' New Open-Source Player
I've already told you about how open-source business intelligence is stretching beyond reporting. Now it looks as if open-source BI development tools are stretching beyond reporting as well. "BI" and "open source" started getting uttered in the same sentence when The Eclipse Foundation, along with software firm Actuate, started making it possible to build reporting tools in an open source environment this year. Big companies including ABN Amro have begun flirting with the Eclipse development environment for their reporting apps. Now a new development platform says it's making it possible to built more than just reporting tools in its environment. European entrant ObjectWeb, a joint venture of Italy's Engineering Ingegneria Informatica and France's ObjectWeb, claims to have produced a platform that offers "data and metadata organization, static reporting and dimensional analysis, hidden information discovering by means of data mining techniques, the building of a structured and dynamic control suite with dashboard components." They've given the platform the very Southern European-sounding moniker of SpagoBI. Those SpagoBI capabilities cover a lot more than just reporting. It seems Eclipse has new open-source competition on the BI front. But I've talked to the Eclipse and Actuate guys before, and you can bet they're not going to stop with reporting functionality when it comes to BI-related open-source app development. The news from ObjectWeb merely means that the convergence of open source and BI is picking up steam. In a big way.
